North Coast Travel Ideas

With a meca of surf beaches, picture perfect coastal towns , fringed by rainforest, charming hinterland villages and world heritage-listed national parks, the North Coast is really something special.

Newcastle and Port Stephens

Starting at home base, Newcastle,  truly vibrant city,  full of great pubs, restaurants and amazing surf beaches, Worth the visit before departing on your 4wd adventure! Close by is Stockton beach, listed as NSW best four wheel driving beach, with 22 kilometres of beach front, 350 hectares of dunes and designated camping areas on the sand. We’ve also included the stockton beach permit on our cars so make sure you give it a run. At the North end of Stocko is Nelson Bay, equally as stunning.

Seal Rocks

One of our personal favourites, Seal rocks is a beautiful small coast town, under 2 hours north of Newcastle. With pristine scenery, campgrounds and plenty of beach four wheel driving. From treachery to Blueys beach is listed as one of the top 8 surf destinations in Australia.

Crescent Head

Crescent head is pretty special to us, a small surfing town under 4 hours from Newcastle. With a population of under 2000 people its best visited outside the holiday periods. Packed with plenty of surf spots and great fishing. From there you can go South on the dirt road past all the surf spots, quiet campgrounds and four wheel driving beaches , to the Hastings River vehicle ferry over to port Macquarie, or vice versa.

Coffs Harbour

Just inland from the heart of Coffs, Bellingen is a Beautiful Heritage Village with a great pub and camping at the local showgrounds. Up the road Dorrigo rainforest centre has some very special waterfalls, bush walks and a spectacular skywalk lookout.

Yet another beautiful coastal town. With plenty to see around town, the clarence river is a beauty, enjoy fishing the yamba markets and heaps more.  Be sure to take a drive out to Angourie. Take a swim in the blue and green pools, take in the beautiful scenery and secluded beaches. Angourie point has a pumping right hand point break for the surfers.

Byron bay

The list of must see and do’s is endless. Byron bay is a truly unique town, take a walk around the town in the heart of Byron and you’ll know what we mean. You’ll find amazing restaurants, bars, and shops. Close by there are great campgrounds, pristine beachfront and a fun right hand point break at the pass. Just south Lennox Head / Ballina are also worth a visit. Great beach driving on 7 mile beach, awesome surf, camping and some great coastal cycle paths.
